CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES mechatronic products are integrated in machine tools, specific machines for production or packaging, material transformation, as well as ultrasonic process ... Our actuators, transducers, sensors & electronics are used in these production machines and process thanks to their robustness, reliability, compact size, and dynamic capabilities, and relevance. Vibration & Ultrasonic assistance

Many tooling processes can be improved thanks to the application of controlled vibrations. The vibration characteristic range is from tens of Hertz up to ultrasonic vibrations, with strokes from tens of microns up to millimetres. Our piezoelectric, magnetostrictive and magnetic actuators, in combination with high power drivers, are particularly relevant with lifetime of several tens of billions of cycles.

Few vibration assistance examples:

  • Vibration assisted machining: The application of sonic forced vibrations in machining processes allows to drill better quality holes, faster with no lubricant. It is much less sensitive to the load and external parameters than ultrasonically assisted machining. Avibus and Chameleon projects demonstrate gains with forced vibration assistance in conventional drilling; such gains are also obtained in Electro Discharging Machining (EDM) cases. To get these gains, high-amplitudes forced vibrations up to 1kHz are proven efficient and are now industrially feasible with CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES PPA piezo actuators and SA75X high power piezo drivers. In some cases, even higher frequencies are beneficial.  For example our actuators PPA10M and PPA20M, driven by our LA75C high power linear amplifier are used to induce forced vibrations at some kHz in glass cutting tools. This is widely used in manufacturing chain of plasma displays.

  • Friction reduction: High frequency vibrations act as a lubricant and reduce the friction in many material shaping processes such as deep-drawing, extrusion, moulding. This principle was for example used to control the clamping forces in deep drawing processes in the frame of LearnForm project. Dedicated high forces PPA actuators were developed, driven by the SA75D, our high power switching amplifiers for piezo.
    The same principle is also used for metal or elastomeric extrusion as well as for micro plastic parts injection. Through the friction reduction, the ultrasounds increases the extrusion speed, reduce the wear, save energy with in the same time an improvement of the manufactured products quality.

  • Ultrasonic assistance: Ultrasonic energy is beneficial for many industrial processes: cleaning, outgassing, extracting, coating and other sonochemical processing.  To get an efficient solution, CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES develop innovative ultrasonic transducers generating high-power acoustic field that are fully adapted to the applications. For example, the Modular UltraSonic Transducers (MUST) were successfully developed to perform the coating antibacterial nano-particles in textile (SONO project). These are new tube transducers able to generate homogeneous high-power radial acoustic fields on several meters. This is a unique solution for processing 2 to 4m wide textiles. However MUST can also be used for many other applications where radial ultrasonic energy is needed. For example, MUST is the baseline in a new sonochemical processor for recycling of batteries (COLABATS project).

Vibration control

In a complementary way to the vibration generation, a recurrent application of our products is the active control of vibration. Many industrial processes suffer from uncontrolled vibrations. The active control of vibration offers large productivity gains, allowing our customers to have a clear differentiation against their competitors. Two approaches are possible to realise active vibration control, the direct control or the proof mass use. 

  • Direct control: To realise this function, an actuator is directly put between the tool we want to damp vibrations and the mechanical reference. Simple in its principle, this architecture imply the use of actuator able to bear the large stress transmitted by the tool. This architecture was applied in a turning application. The PPA high stiffness, robustness and dynamic capability make PPA particularly suitable for this application.

  • Proof mass architecture: This architecture principle is to create a reaction force to damp vibration by controlling the displacement of a counter mass. In order to ease the mechanical integration as well as for cantilever management, the actuator has to be compact, powerful and controllable. MICA™ actuators were designed to meet these specifications.

Position Control

High dynamic capabilities as well as high precision are the main qualities people are looking for positioning in production domain. Our products are used in many different kinds of machine, such as micro electronic manufacturing, large size metallic parts machine tooling (turning, milling), factory automation and robots. CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES proposes a complete offer with complementary piezoelectric and magnetic actuators, motors, mechanisms & drives, covering stroke from 10µm to 10 mm with the same level of reliability in a compact size. Achieved static positioning stabilities can be better than 1 nanometer @ 1 hour, which allow for addressing ultra precision. Dynamic position precision can be better than 1µm @ 1kHz on billions of cycles.
