Ongoing progress in flow control actuators and required drive electronics

In the frame of the Cleansky 2 projects SYNJET3C and FLOCOS, CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES (CTEC) and TRISITEC are collaborating with both FRAUNHOFER and ONERA institutes, two major European research leaders in the development of Synthetic Jet Actuators (SJA) for Aerospace applications. While SYNJET3C project is dedicated to SJA mechanical designs and optimisation, as well as testing including wind tunnel tests, FLOCOS project is dedicated to the design and manufacturing of a specific SJA drive Electronic called SADS (Synthetic Jet Actuator Drive System).

Improving Lamb Wave detection for SHM using a dedicated LWDS electronics

In the context of Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) for aircrafts, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is one main field of research. Detection and localization of damages in a structure request reliability of the equipment and repeatability of the measurements and process. An electronic device called Lamb Wave Detection System (LWDS) have been developed and manufactured to manage piezo-electric patches either in emission or reception mode with a high commutation rate. Besides, integration of the piezo patches is another crucial aspect of reliability. Several methods as modelling and dispersion curves can define the frequency range of Lamb waves to optimize the piezo-electric coupling. This work which takes part of the H2020 ReMAP project about adaptative aircraft maintenance planning, is presented in the article.

Magnetic fast steering mirrors

Large Stroke Fast Steering Mirror for Space Free-Space Optical communication

Free-Space Optics and Deep Space Optical Communication request new compact low-power high-stroke high-bandwidth Fast Steering Mirrors. To address this need, CEDRAT TECHNOLOGIES has developed a Magnetically-actuated Fast Steering Mirror called M-FSM, taking heritage of its MICA™ technology. This mechanism offers Rx Ry strokes larger than +/-2° with a 250Hz bandwidth when tilting a 10mm-diameter mirror. Closed loop control is achieved using integrated eddy current sensors. Requested power is reduced leading to low heating and allowing high duty cycle. Vibration tests allow to define first limits and conditions for the M-FSM to bear external vibrations.

Robustness of SHM techniques based on lamb waves

Required improvements of piezoelectric elements actuation and measurement system efficiency and robustness are introduced as a critical feature for structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. An electronic module (Lamb wave detection system: LWDS) allowing to use each piezoelectric element in an array either in emission or reception mode is presented. The high commutation rate between these two states, for each transducer separately, is a key enhancement for SHM methods. The robustness of the sensor integration is also studied considering the patches size and bonding method. Coupled dispersion curve are introduced Comparison of FEM simulation and experiments of the piezo-electric coupling are presented. This work takes part of the H2020 REMAP project about adaptive aircraft maintenance planning.

FSPA motor and driver

Fine stepping piezo actuator for IASI-NG

Many applications and more specifically space projects would have use of a stable sub-micrometre positioning actuator. In order to meet this need, Cedrat Technologies has designed the new FSPA brand. This linear stepping actuator offers sub-micrometric positioning resolution along 5mm stroke combined with high actuation force (>100N) and the ability to hold its position without power. Starting from the FSPA, a special version is being developed for the IASI-NG space instrument. This light (500g), fully redundant actuator is designed to achieve 150μm stroke with locking at rest, 60 N force with a 25-50 nm step resolution and resistance to launching. The paper presents the base FSPA actuator and the new high performance space variant.

synthetic jet actuator

High performance synthetic jet actuator for aerodynamic flow improvement over airplane wings

Abstract: In the framework of a French National Program, the project ASPIC aims at using synthetic jet actuators to improve aerodynamic performance of aircrafts. The partnership between Cedrat Technologies (CTEC) and the French Aerospace Lab (ONERA) in this project has led to design, manufacture and test a high efficiency innovative synthetic jet actuator. This device relying in part on an ONERA patent is actuated by a CTEC amplified piezoactuator (APA). Its aim is to provide a high speed synthetic jet compatible with flow control application on aircrafts or any other vehicle. Latest available test results and experimental performances of the ASPIC synthetic actuator are presented in this document: in particular, a peak exit velocity of 135m.s-1 during suction, and of 150m.s-1 during blowing, with an optimal actuation frequency bandwidth between 200 and 300Hz.
